Athe sum total of his experiences to the fore on Main Street. Those experiences include many different configurations as a leader as well as stints with Frank Wess, The Mingus Big Band, Jack McDuff, and The Toshiko Akiyoshi Orchestra. Here he draws upon a quartercentury of touring experiences for a trip through some of the American experience via a cycle of new compositions and two covers. With bassist, composer and educator Linda Oh, drummer Rudy Royston and the volatile Cuban pianist Fabian Almazan, Main Street is an exemplar of everything a great jazz album could be: Fresh original material, imaginative arrangements of well-chosen classics, inspired soloing, and cohesive yet spontaneous group interaction. Take a trip down one of the coolest, classiest boulevards in jazz circa 2014. |
